High five for the first day
Teacher's aide Kara Gayhart (left) gives Kirsten Blinderman (middle) a high five as she comes back to Waller School in Wednesday morning for the first day of classes in the Burlington Area School District. Blinderman's brother, Ian, looks happy to be back, too. (Photo by Jennifer Eisenbart)

A giant in the practice of humanity
Dr. Leif Erickson Sr. visits with Virginia Irwin while making rounds at Mt. Carmel Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington late last year. Erickson, who practiced in Burlington for 60 years, died Aug. 27.
By most physical measures, Dr. Lief Erickson Sr. was a diminutive man.

But consider that his small hands coaxed the first breaths of life from thousands of babies, provided a technician's skill and a comforting squeeze for countless people in medical crisis, unselfishly reached out to a community in need of leaders, and lovingly brushed the cheeks of the elderly and infirm as they drew their last breaths - and you begin to see the portrait of a giant in the practice of humanity.
